Honors Program Benefits
The most significant benefit of being in the Honors Program is being among other
students who enjoy intellectual engagement. However, there are also tangible benefits
for participants in the Honors Program:
Research Funding
Honors students whose research is not fully funded by the University's undergraduate research grant program may apply for additional financial support from the Honros Program.
Early Registration
Current UE Students
Students in the Honors Program have the privilege to register for classes on the first day
of registration in order to ensure that they will be able to enroll in their
first choice courses. This is effective for freshmen when they register for their spring semester.
Incoming UE Students
Incoming students admitted to the Honors Program have the option to
register early for fall classes. Registering early allows more freedom in your schedule
to register for special Honors classes.
Early registration is available to students
admitted to the Honors Program by March 1, 2008, who have submitted their $300 non-refundable
admission deposit by April 1. (Please notice that these deadlines are in advance of the
regular Honors application deadline of April 2 and the admission deposit deadline of May 1).
If you choose not to participate in early registration, you will not jeopardize your position
as an Honors Program student and will be able to register during one of our summer
SOAR
(Student Orientation and Academic Registration) sessions with your other class mates.
If you elect to participate in early registration, you will be contacted before May 1 by a
faculty advisor via e-mail and/or telephone to build your class schedule and register.
You will still need to attend one of our summer SOAR sessions to complete your
enrollment to the University. During the registration segment of SOAR, you are welcome
to meet with an advisor to revise your schedule or to make adjustments.
Students admitted to the Honors Program by March 1 will be mailed an invitation to
participate in early registration.
Honors Housing
Honors Program students have the option to live in special honors housing
located in Powell Residence Hall, one of the newest halls on campus.
Space is limited but available to incoming and current Honors Program students.
Applications are available in the Office of Residence Life.
The Honors Program faculty-in-residence, Dr. Valerie Stein, resides in Powell Hall
and hosts weekly Honors teas. Teas are an informal affair for discussion and
social gathering for Honors participants and faculty.
Honors Lounge
The Honors Lounge is for the exclusive use of students in the Program and is located in
Powell Residence Hall. The room is used for HPSAC meetings, classes,
informal gatherings, and study. For those who don’t live in Powell, access to the
lounge is available through requesting a key from the Honors director.
The lounge contains computers, printers, printer/copier, TV/DVD/VCR, micro-fridge,
books, magazines, and is available 24 hours a day. Printing is free.
The lounge also contains office supplies and various resources.
Honors E-mail Distribution List
The Honors Program maintains an e-mail listserv, whereby members of the Program may communicate
with each other and the Honors Program director and HPSAC members may notify participants of
important announcements. Students are automatically added to the list when they enter the Program.
Honors Cords and Medallions
Students who complete the Program will receive purple cords and a medallion to wear with
their academic regalia at graduation. Cords will be awarded at the Honors graduate reception,
or can be obtained from the director the week before graduation.
Transcript
Upon graduation and completion of the program requirements, the transcript of honors students
will read "Completed University Honors Program."
Honors courses are denoted with an "H" following the course number (i.e. WC 120H).
